Lisa Atkins

General Manager, Rialto
“At Rialto, we have a commitment to always aiming higher. We know that single-use is simply not sustainable, and in line with community expectations, we aim to alleviate the need for single-use coffee cups. By implementing the TCX service, we’ve enabled our community to get the best of both worlds; takeaway convenience without the waste. Rialto is fortunate to house some of the most iconic coffee brands in Melbourne. For us, it was important to choose a product that maintains the same high standards of experience, taste and quality served up daily by our café community. We’ve found TCX to be an ideal fit for our cafes and customers since launching the service, with over 5,000 single-use cups avoided in just the first month.”

"TCX has been awesome for us here at Rustica. Not only is it saving us money from not having to buy hundreds of paper cups a week, but our prime motivation is saving the turtles. We really care about our environmental impact and replacing paper cups with TCX is helping us and our customers contribute to a cleaner planet. Our customers love how easy it is to use, and how much better the TCX Cups are than paper cups. We’ve really been pushing the service, because we see it as a simple way to make a real difference."

TRANSITION TO "SINGLE-USE CUP FREE"

TCX programs enable organisations to demonstrate real action on sustainability, by implementing a circular economy solution to solving a linear economy waste challenge. Businesses are becoming more aware of the need to provide genuine sustainability initiatives, as the next generation demands action to ensure a sustainable future. Alongside the realisation that traditional models such as recycling are no longer enough to combat the pressures of single-use on the environment, savvy businesses know the time to act is now.

Transitioning with a TCX Kickstart Program starts with choosing a "Singe-Use Cup Free Date" - a future date after which no single-use, disposable coffee cups will be permitted in your tenancy, building or office. We then work with you & your building manager to enable TCX infrastructure, services & memberships within your organisation, nearby cafes & office building precinct.

Following a 2-month account sponsorship, employees may continue using the TCX service with a TCX Personal Plan, or bring their own BYO cup. This maintains the commitment to being "Single-Use Cup Free" & eliminating waste contamination, disposal costs and damage to the Planet.

Alternatively, organisations can begin a journey towards single-use freedom, by embedding the TCX service as part of "how we do things around here" with a TCX Culture Program. By providing a high-visibilty, high-touch sustainability program such as TCX into corporate culture, organisations create a significant Employee Value Proposition for the new generation who value sustainable action from their employer.

Just like a kisktart program, we work with you & your building manager to enable return infrastructure within your tenancies & office building precinct, provide communications support & on-board your favourite nearby cafés.

REDUCE CLIMATE CONTAMINATION

Single-use disposable coffee cups are the #1 contaminant of recycling waste streams. Due largely to misinformation, paper cups cannot be recycled (due to their inner plastic lining) but are believed to be recyclable. Even a small number of cups can contaminate a bag of recycled waste, resulting in the entire load being sent to landfill, rather than to a recycling facility.

However, it's not just paper cups that are catastrophic to the environment - and organisation's waste management budgets. Other single-use alternatives - such as compostables, biodegradables, recycling services and plant-based materials - still pose a threat. As "positive" as the disposal process may be, many forms of disposal require heavy resource use (eg: chemical composting and down-cycling), and the product is still single-use. The resource utilisation grossly outweighs the usage time (Millions of tonnes of materials for 5-10 minutes of use).

To truly Close the Loop, organisations must remove single-use products as an option. TCX is the only genuinely Circular Economy solution that closes the loop on both manufacturing and disposal, while maximising product re-use. By minimising manufacture, with highly efficient single-shot moulding, and capturing & re-making 100% of the material into new TCX Cups at end of life, TCX guarantees zero waste to landfill and significantly reduces environmental impact.

POSITIVE STAFF ENGAGEMENT

Businesses are facing growing pressure from consumers, and employees, to take real action on Climate Change. A recent Kin & Co poll found that "over two-thirds of the UK population claim climate change is an ‘urgent issue’ for brands and 60% say the responsibility for climate change sits with CEOs."

As internal pressure mounts, senior leaders are being asked to provide real solutions, and actionable programs that create genuine results. The time for talk appears to be over, and employees are demanding tangible action. The Kin & Co poll noted that over a third of employees "would have greater respect for their CEO if they declared a climate emergency."

We all know that single-use items are major contributors to landfill waste, ocean pollution & carbon emmissions. Here at TCX we believe that 'making more stuff' will not solve the problem. Which is why we're determined to eliminate single-use as an option. Our transition programs are designed to help organisations remove single-use cups from their waste streams, in a way that is affordable, convenient, efficient and which creates benefits at every stage of the value chain.

Enabling TCX at your premises is real action on Climate Change. TCX programs ensure single-use cups no longer enter your premises, eliminating waste contamination, reducing waste management costs and providing visibility on program success through real-time data. No other program enables CEOs to create such tangible change within their organisations.

Join the Circular Economy today and prove your business is serious about helping the planet avoid disaster.

VISIBLE SUSTAINABILITY DATA

Traditionally, reporting on Sustainability efforts has been challenging. With the TCX Reporting Dashboard and Real-Time Odometer, sustainability becomes visible. Every time a TCX Exchangeable Cup is scanned out, a single-use disposable cup is saved from going to landfill.

We track and tally every scan, aggregating the data for our customers, to provide real-time reporting on how many cups have been saved.

From cafés to corporates, buildings to cities, we can slice and dice the data to provide live sustainability insights. Our customers can view their impact on the planet in real-time, and with widget and API access, display their successes on their websites, apps and digital assets.

TCX ushers in a new era of sustainability effort visibility, enabling businesses to capture, display and report meaningful numbers to shareholders, staff and customers.

GENUINELY CLOSE THE LOOP

A single-use coffee cup takes 1 Litre of water, virgin paper pulp from trees, and produces kilograms of waste and C02 during manufacture. It gets used for 5-10 minutes, and disposed into waste (or recycling) where it more often than not ends up in landfill. "Sustainable" options such as compostables, biodegradables and degradables may be diverted from landfill, but often require heavy processing or resource intensive conditions (such as maintaing 55 degrees for 60 days to compost) in order to achieve successful disposal.

The Linear model (Take - Make - Dispose) is broken. Thankfully, awareness of Circular solutions, Avoidance and Re-Use is growing amongst those concerned with the impact of linear models on the climate. However, many solutions that claim to be "Circular" or "Closed Loop" are still focussed on linear thinking - make stuff, use it once and find a new way to dispose of it. They focus on disposal, but continue to manufacture millions of disposable items in the first place. This is not genuine Circular thinking.

To genuinely Close The Loop on waste there needs to be focus on all aspects of the product lifecycle. A truly Circular approach aims for Avoidance, Re-Use & Re-Purposing - maximising resource utilisation whilst minimising resource usage in production & re-manufacturing. This is the only way to eliminate continuous manufacture & disposal, as waste is not being generated at any stage of the lifecycle.

We believe TCX provides orgnisations with a genuine solution to the pending Climate catastrophe caused by linear production, single-use and disposal. Together we can eliminate single-use and move towards Zero waste to Landfill.
